Tesco a 'formidable competitor'

Supermarket giant Tesco is poised to open 30 stores in California, Arizona and Nevada starting in November. When it does, Britain's largest retailer could be on its way toward taking a hefty bite out of sales of existing chains like Pleasanton, Calif.-based Safeway Inc. that serve the same market, according to a Bloomberg News story published in the Salt Lake Tribune.
