Retail Roundup

Peter R. Lavoy, Stephen F. Rooney, Nicholas Sumas, John J. Sumas and Kevin Begley have been elected to the board of directors of Village Super Market Inc., Springfield, N.J., according to a news release. The company operates a chain of 26 supermarkets under the ShopRite name in New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania.

The four Marketside grocery stores that Bentonville, Ark.-based Wal-Mart Inc. is testing in Arizona now have a new name – Marketside by Wal-Mart – and a new logo, the East Valley Tribune in Mesa, Ariz., reported. The stores emphasize convenience, freshness and low prices, like the El Segundo, Calif.-based Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market, the newspaper said. Fresh & Easy also has opened stores in Arizona.

A stream of improvements has helped Landover, Md.-based Giant Food LLC earn sales increases for three consecutive quarters for the first time in several years, the Baltimore Sun reported. The stores have lowered prices, improved their selection of organic foods, widened their aisles and added electronic devices that enable consumers to scan their purchases as they shop, the newspaper reported.
